Literary Hub에서 2010년부터 2019년까지 영어로 씌여진 소설들 중 최고의 데뷔작 Top 10, <The 10 Best Debut Novels of the Decade>를 골라 실었다. 찾아보니, 몇 권은 번역되었고 몇 권은 번역되지 않은 상태다. 내가 이 기사에 흥미를 느끼는 이유는, 대체로 가장 강렬한 감정을 느끼게 하는 소설은 작가가 맨 처음 쓴 데뷔작인 경우가 많았기 때문이다. 소설에 대한 자유롭고 도전적인 분위기 속에서 자신이 가지고 있는 문제의식을 극대화시킨다고 할까. 번역서가 있는 경우에는 옆에 번역된 정보를 같이 표시하였다. 의외로 번역된 책이 많지 않다. 다섯 권 밖에 되지 않다니.
글은 아래와 같은 문장으로 시작한다.
Friends, it's true: the end of the decade approaches. It's been a difficult, anxiety-provoking, morally compromised decade, but at least it's been populated by some fine literature. We'll take our silver linings where we can. (친구들이여, 이건 사실이다. 다시 십년대의 끝이 다가오고 있다. 힘들고 근심거리가 끊임없이 생겨나고 도덕적으로 위태로웠던 이 10년을, 몇몇 순수 문학으로 인해 그나마 그 시대를 살 수 있었다. 우리가 할 수 있는 곳에 우리들의 밝은 희망들을 가져다 놓을 것이다.)
번역을 하니, 영 이상하다. 그냥 내 식으로 옮기자면,
친구들이여, 이제 2010년대의 끝자락이 보이기 시작한다. 힘들었고 끊임없이 걱정을 안겨주었으며, 도덕적으로도 상당히 위태로웠던 그 10년간의 시절, 그러나 우리들은 몇 권의 뛰어난 문학작품들로 인해 그 십년을 견딜 수 있었다. 이것은 진실이다. 여기 우리가 만들어 가는 곳에 우리들에게 살아갈 희망을 안겨주었던 그 작품들을 소개하고자 한다.
(이렇게 번역하면 되는 건가? 영어를 한글로 옮기는 연습을 할 수록, 번역은 일종의 태도이며 은근슬쩍 자신의 가치관이나 세계관을 밀어넣을 수 있는 고도의 정치술이라는 생각이 든다.)
글은 Lit Hub의 편집자들이 정리하였으며, 소설 선정에 있어서 상당히 많은 토론과 투표를 거쳤다고 한다. 글을 읽고 흥미를 느낀 책들을 굵게 표시하였다. 영어가 익숙하다면 다 읽고 싶지만.

글은 선정된 Top 10 목록을 소개하고 아쉽게 선정되지 못한 소설들을 소개하고 있다. Garth Greenwell의 소설에 등장하는 Mitko는 불가리아에서 흔하게 사용하는 이름으로 잘 생기고 쿨한 느낌의 남자를 연상시킨다고 한다. 소개하는 글에서는 이 소설이 동성애 소설이라는 표현은 없지만, 이 소설은 동성애 소설이다. Mitko에 의해 인생이 꼬이는 사랑 소설? 하지만 상당한 수작으로 이 소설을 소개한 이는 'The first section is wonderful: beautiful written (Greenwell is a poet) and intriguing.'라고 찬사를 거듭한다. Goodreads.com에서의 평점도 나쁘지 않다. 다만 동성애 소설이라는 점이 신경에 거슬리긴 하지만.
온라인으로 영어권의 여러 저널의 뉴스레터를 받아보는데, 한결같이 리버럴한 어조를 가지고 있다. 내 성향이 그래서 그런 건지, 아니면 글을 쓰고 책을 좋아하는 이들의 성향인지, 온라인은 결국 다양한 사람들의 의견을 모으기 보다는 비슷한 생각을 가진 이들의 결속력을 더 강화시켜 급기야 그것의 충돌을 유발하는 것은 아닌가 생각했다. 그것도 지역적이 아닌 세계적인 범위에서.
